So this was one of those cooking projects that I underestimated a bit, meaning I really didn’t take enough photos. Either way, here’s the scoop on this adorable little pie:
My nephew’s birthday was coming up, and he LOVES airplanes. He doesn’t really eat sugary things, but I thought it would be fun to make a classic apple pie with an airplane theme just for him.
I made this from scratch (the dough, too) and used the leftover dough to make little clouds and a plane, which I cut free-hand with a knife. I just used a tiny drop of water to bind the cutouts to the top of the pie and baked as usual.
Anyhow, this came out SO cute, but just a few minutes after it was done, we (my husband and I) got a call from my mother in law that she was just coming home from the hospital after crashing on her cycling bike. She was pretty scraped up and shaken, but really perked up when she heard about the apple pie (her favorite). So, the hubby and I decided that our nephew would have a very happy birthday with or without us and the pie, and we went to see his mom and do a movie-night with her to help make her feel better. The pie barely made it in the front door, so this is pretty much the only photo I have of it.
Scenes like this are very easy to make, and you can always use cookie-cutters if you aren’t so handy with free-handing. They make a simple, humble pie into an adorable work of art, and they’re a nice little touch for special occasions.
Hope you enjoyed the pie-spiration! Happy Baking!
